Today’s Order: Golosi

The Order:

With its high reputation among many people in the office, its “I always seem to walk by here” location right by Grand Central, and the combination of pizza and gelato (not quite Pizza Hut and Taco Bell), Golosi was a great choice for lunch today. In a nontraditional, although increasingly popular, twist, Golosi sells its pizza by the inch. They have a default size for slices  (3 inches by 10 inches), but if that’s not enough, you can just add an inch, or two, or you get the idea. I like to judge every new pizza place I try by it’s Plain/Margherita slice, so I ordered up one of those, along with a Parma slice featuring prosciutto and arugula. AnnMarie opted for the Vegi slice loaded with zucchini, mushrooms, and fresh tomato. Also, SOLELY for the benefit of you all, I ordered one scoop of chocolate gelato.

The Meal:

Size does matter. I wasn’t gonna say it or even think it, but since Golosi makes a point of it, I was a little surprised when I saw the proportions of the pizza. Three inches is fairly narrow (smaller than the screen on an iPhone) and these slices definitely looked wider, so I took out a ruler. Turns out each slice was not 3 inches by 10 inches, but actually 5 inches by 8 inches and we got more square inches of pizza than we bargained for! A pretty good start…

The biggest issue with ordering pizza and gelato at the same time though for delivery is that you are immediately in a race against time to try and eat the pizza while it’s hot so that you can then enjoy the gelato while it’s still cold and not melted. But since I’m a bit of a slow eater, I decided that was a fool’s errand and happily alternated between bites of pizza and spoonfuls of gelato. I really liked that the “single” slice of pizza was actually separated into two slices, making it seem like there was more there AND doubling the amount of crust I could have. The Margherita was very flavorful and hit all the high notes I was looking for, while the Parma used the Margherita base to great effect and simply added toppings. The prosciutto ultimately wasn’t the highest quality meat, but it tasted good enough to be worth adding or ordering. The chocolate gelato was very rich and offered a nice complement to the pizza, even if I wasn’t able to finish all of it before it turned to soup (you get a lot for one scoop!).

AnnMarie thought the pizza could have been warmer upon arrival (and I don’t blame her), but the veggies on her pizza were great, especially the zucchini. Better yet, there were plenty of ‘em and the filling slice was one she’ll be ordering again. Maybe with gelato too…

So if you’re looking for pizza and/or gelato in Midtown, we think Golosi is the spot.
