Last week, we challenged you to take a culinary leap of faith. Let’s see how it went.
It’s a good thing that they put quotes around the ’1000 Year Old’ part of the title or else no one would want to eat it. Then again, it’s an ice cream sandwich, so how bad could it be? I’m talking of course about the ’1000 Year Old’ Ice Cream Sandwich from Xie Xie, a mystery food recommended to us by a tweeter and fellow curious eater. In our original post, a reader commented that the sandwich was created to resemble the thousand-year-old egg, which we thought was pretty pretty pretty cool. But there was only one way to find out for sure, so we put Jessie on the case and here’s what she had to say about the experience:
I decided to satisfy SeamlessWeb’s curiosity and order the ’1,000 Year Old’ Ice Cream Sandwich from Xie Xie this weekend. Unfortunately they didn’t deliver to my apartment, but luckily the weather was absolutely gorgeous and a walk to pick up an ice cream sandwich was a great Sunday activity. With a funny-sounding and long-winded name, I was a bit skeptical of this specialty dessert, but in the end, the results were actually pretty good. When you get down to it, Xie Xie’s signature dessert is seemingly simple, featuring vanilla ice cream sandwiched in between two very thin chocolate cookies. But things get a little complicated (in a good way!) with a surprise in the center: black caramel. Meant to resemble the egg yolk, I thoroughly enjoyed the way it combined with the ice cream for a sweet-salty sensation. All in all, it was a nice treat for a warm afternoon and would be a lovely dessert to share, albeit a bit overwhelming for one person.
